Reading the Bible Reflectively
I received an email this week with these verses from Psalm 139:23-24 at the top: “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting”. It went on to offer different ways we can spend intentional time reflecting on God’s faithfulness while reading His Word. I’d love to share them with you.
Before reading a Bible verse or passage, pray. Ask God to show you what He wants you to learn from His Word today. Then read through the verses slowly, paying attention to any words that stand out to you. Then when you’re finished reading ask yourself 3 questions – what does this passage reveal about who God is? What is the main point of this passage? And how can I apply this to my life today? Finish by asking God to help you reflect on this verse throughout your day.
Other suggestions include reading the Bible passage in other Bible translations. Different translations will use slightly different words or phrases and may be helpful to bring the text alive or bring you new understanding. Allow the differences in the text to give you a broader understanding of the verses.
You might like to write down a couple of take-away points about the Scriptures you’ve studied. Or you can draw or paint or sing in response!
At the back of the current Growth Group Guide there is a series of Scripture readings to be used in the week leading up to Easter. Can I encourage you to make time each day to reflect on the verses and let the Holy Spirit remind you of all that the Saviour has done for you?
There are also devotionals to do together as a family. And because children learn best by ‘doing’, these have a practical element to them. I pray that you will make time to lead your children in these so that their hearts may also come to a deeper understanding and appreciation for all Jesus gave up for them.
Reflecting on God’s Word is so important. It helps us slow down and remember that God is faithful in every season of life.
“Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.” Psalm 34:8
