Get Off the Rocking Chair
I’ll be honest with you all. This time of the year I feel like I am being pulled in every direction. There are end-of-year celebrations, Carols and Christmas services to plan for, family get togethers, work commitments, Christmas planning and gift buying—not to mention feeding the children who have bottom-less stomachs! Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate that all these things are wonderful blessings in my life. But there are moments when it can seem a little overwhelming.
Jesus said, “…I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? …which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?” (Matthew 6:25, 27a)
I’ve heard before that worry is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do but doesn’t get you anywhere. Jesus tells us not to worry, because if our heavenly Father feeds and clothes even the birds of the air and grows the lilies of the field, then how much more will be care for us!
How can we make sure we don’t become overwhelmed this time of the year? The answer is a little further on in Matthew 6, when Jesus says, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (v.33)
I encourage all of us to start our day by focusing on all God has blessed us with. By asking Him to guide our thoughts, our actions, and our time. The to-do-list will remain, but the priority and pressure of it will be realigned as we seek Him first.
Friends, be proactive and diligent to prioritise your time, money and attention in a good and Godly way. I am praying that we won’t become overwhelmed during this busy time of the year. Rather, that we will seek first His kingdom. That we will thank God for the blessings that keep us busy and that He will guide us in how we use and share those blessings.
God Bless,
Emma
