Waiting with God

What are you waiting for?

Maybe you’re waiting for results from a doctor. Or waiting for a job to come through. For healing. For peace. For a child to return. For direction.

The truth is—at any given moment, most of us are waiting for something. And while waiting can be a small inconvenience (like standing in line at the supermarket), it can also feel like a heavy burden that presses on your heart daily.

Psalm 62 meets us right there—in the tension of waiting. David, the author of this Psalm, was likely writing during a time of deep personal crisis, perhaps even betrayal by his own son Absalom. But what’s striking is this: the Psalm doesn’t focus on the resolution. It focuses on who David turns to in the waiting.

Over and over again, David repeats one word: alone.

“For God alone my soul waits in silence… He alone is my rock and my salvation.”
—Psalm 62:1–2

David doesn’t place partial hope in God and partial hope in circumstances. He fully rests in God’s power and steadfast love.

This Psalm gives us permission to pour out our hearts before God (v.8). It reminds us that human strength and success are fleeting (v.9–10), but that God’s power and love are forever (v.11–12). And it invites us to trust—not just in what God will give us—but in who God is.

As pastor and author Paul Tripp writes:

“Waiting on God is not about what you get at the end of the wait; waiting on God is what you become as you’ve waited.”

So, what are you becoming as you wait?

Let this Psalm point your heart not just to David’s hope—but to David’s greater Son, Jesus. Jesus also waited—He waited in the wilderness, in the garden, on the cross. He poured out His heart in prayer. And He trusted His Father completely.

Because Jesus waited and suffered for us, we never wait alone.

Even when we don’t yet have answers, we can trust the One who holds all things in His hands. Jesus is our Rock, our Refuge, our Salvation.

And our waiting will not have the last word. Jesus will.

“Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us.”
—Psalm 62:8

Amen.
