Creator God

I love Autumn, it’s my favourite season by far. I love the cool air, the clear sky, the warm sun, the changing colours of the leaves. And while I feel like this autumn was swallowed up in too many overcast, drizzly days, the clouds certainly do make for stunning sunsets. Being outside in nature makes me marvel and reflect on all that God has made, which always leads me to praise Him.

The Bible tells us that we can know much about God by contemplating His creation, for He graciously reveals Himself to us through it. Creation points to an intelligent and powerful being, capable of creating such intricate and impressive variety and beauty. Theologian Wayne Grudem writes that every part of God’s creation; the leaves, the flowers, the mountains “all cry out continuously, ‘God made me! God made me! God made me!’”

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.” Psalm 19:1-4

Knowledge of God is revealed not only in the act of creation, but through the ongoing provision and sustaining of the created world. The seasons, the rain, the harvest all bear witness to a God who cares and provides. A God who is near, not distant. A good God who sustains His creatures by His mighty hand.

“Yet He did not leave himself without witness, for he did good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness.” Acts 14:17

The Belgic Confession states that we can know God “by the creation, preservation, and government of the universe; which is before our eyes as a most elegant book, wherein all creatures, great and small, are as so many characters leading us to see clearly the invisible things of God, even his everlasting power and divinity.”

“Ever since the creation of the world His eternal power and divine nature, invisible though they are, have been understood and seen through the things he has made.” Romans 1:20

Creation reflects the Creator – His power, His majesty, His wisdom, His provision, His goodness.

So, as the days grow shorter and the air becomes cooler, can I encourage you to take some moments to look around and notice the changes and marvel at the Creator. And as you do, know that the same God who created and sustains the world around you, is the God who created and sustains you, throughout all the seasons of your life.

“Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you” Luke 12:27,28

Amen
