Don’t Wait for “Tomorrow”

We’ve all, at some point, put our relationship with God on the back burner. Life gets in the way, and we tend to make excuses for why we don’t have enough time to maintain, let alone grow, our relationship with Him. This is something that I found myself doing in my own life as “things got busy”. We often think that once we finish our exams, finish a project at work, or get out of this busy slump, we’ll start reading our Bible again, start praying, or start putting in the effort with God.

Here’s the thing: while it can be good to be busy, being busy can also harm our relationship with God. We might be busy doing good things, but those good things can draw us away from doing God things. All it takes is to start spending less time with Him here and there, and then we find that we’re sliding down a slippery slope that leads to spending no time with Him at all. As we start making time for other things in life instead of making time for God, we forget what truly matters.

The time that we have is precious, and when we get to the end of a long, busy day, it’s easy ot think that “I’ve had a really long day, I’ll just read my Bible tomorrow,” or “I’ll pray properly tomorrow, I’m just too tired”. The problem is that the “tomorrow” we talk about often doesn’t come. One tomorrow turns into another and another, and before you know it, weeks have gone by, and we still haven’t done what we said we would. This is along the lines of what Paul writes about in Ephesians 5:15-16

“15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.”

If our time really is as precious as it says here, then we can’t allow ourselves to wait for “tomorrow” to start making time for our relationship with God. It’s important that we all think of what we’ve been setting off in our relationship with God, turning our “tomorrow” into “today”. What does our “today” need to look like? What do we need to do TODAY, not just to maintain our relationship with God, but to actually GROW in our relationship with him? Do we need to spend some time in His Word? Praying instead of just thinking about praying? Whatever it is, we need to be honest with ourselves and be honest with God. We need to trust in God and know that when we make time for him, he will make things work out. Part of that trust starts with actually slowing down enough so that we are able to be with Him

In Psalm 46:10, we read: “Be still, and know that I am God…”

Being still can be hard in any season of life, let alone a busy one. But when we allow ourselves to be still, we remember who’s actually holding everything together. And remember, when we go to seek God, he is always there, and we are never ‘too far gone’. He always has his hand stretched out to us.

James 4:8 says, “ Come near to God, and he will come near to you.”

Don’t wait for “tomorrow” or for the busy season to finish; make time today, even if it’s something small. Start growing your relationship with God now.

In Christ,
